IRS DRT will be available for 2018-19

Federal Student Aid will reinstate the use of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool beginning with the 2018-19 FAFSA application cycle.

To enhance the security and privacy of the sensitive personal data transferred into the FAFSA form from the IRS, the new tool will encrypt the applicants and/ or parents information and hide it from view on both the IRS DRT website and on the FAFSA web pages.  The FAFSA will provide the option to link (for those eligible to use the tool) to the IRS to retrieve their data.  Once on the IRS website, applicants and parents will proceed through the authentication process, and once authenticated, will be provided a list of all the possible fields from a tax return that could transfer back into the FAFSA form. If an applicant or parent agrees to transfer their data back into the FAFSA form, they will not see the actual transferred data, instead, they will the words "Transferred from the IRS" in the data entry fields.
