Know your Rights and Responsibilities and What you can Expect as a Penn State Student

Last year, more than 63,400 Penn State students received student financial assistance to help with the cost of education. Federal, state, and institutional resources partner with you and your family to help meet your educational costs. You, as a student financial aid recipient have a number of Rights and Responsibilities.

Per federal regulations set forth by The Higher Education Act of 1965 (amended in 2008), educational institutions are required to disclose specific consumer information about the school and the availability of student financial aid to prospective and continuing students.

Blue checkmark Track your Federal Loan Borrowing History on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS)

National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) is the U.S. Department of Education's central database for student aid and provides aid information, including Title IV loans and Pell Grants. NSLDS tracks this information from the financial aid approval stage through the closure stage.Data is transmitted to NSLDS from schools, agencies that guaranty loans, the Direct Loan program, the Pell Grant program, and other U.S. Department of Education programs.

You can view your NSLDS information by logging into studentaid.gov. Your profile will provide personalized information like your federal student loan balance, disbursement dates and contact information. You can also view information on your federal loan servicer(s).

Blue checkmark Review the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy

Penn State's SAP Policy outlines the federal regulations we must follow to monitor student progression toward completion of degree and certificate programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree levels.

Review and respond to Holds or To Do List Items that require you to complete or submit additional items, or any Communication(s) that require a response. This will cause delays in the processing of your Financial Aid.
